Why Do People Comment?
Read through the comments in a thread on any public network and you’ll notice a pattern: few care about adding to the conversation or providing helpful advice – most use it to show off what they know (or what they think they know).
Even on the rare occasion when you write something that, gasp, people actually agree with on the Internet, the responses are almost never “great work” but instead “so true” or a sentence or two about how the person already knows and agrees with you.
Aside from pointing out the phenomenon, understanding that comment threads are yet another place where people want to show off what they want others to know about them should help you figure out what types of material to post and what responses to expect.
That, and the importance of respecting cognitive dissonance should shape how you interact with your audience. So let’s talk about that for a minute.
